International Jewish LGBT Organization Launched in the Wake of Tragedy

This August, over 70 activists gathered in Salzburg, Austria for a three-day conference to launch the first-ever international Jewish LGBT organization.

The event was organized in the wake of a tragedy at this summer’s Jerusalem Pride parade. In what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “manifestation of hate,” 16-year-old Shira Banki was fatally stabbed by an Orthodox Jewish man who had previously spent 10 years in prison for committing the same crime in 2005.
